You can almost hear it now – the giddy squeals of delight as children rush to their presents under the tree. Wrapping paper is ripped open, there are happy surprises, hugs, and choruses of “it’s just what I wanted.”

Perhaps you never outgrow the joy of receiving a thoughtful gift from a person you love. Nonetheless, as an adult, it’s likely that you’ve grown to also enjoy the art of giving a gift, one that is carefully chosen, that you hope will be treasured long after the wrapping paper is gone.

That’s what an endowment is. A gift to an endowment fund established with the Shelby Community Foundation is a gift with a future. The funds are invested and continue to have an impact in the community long after the original gift is made. If your gift meets a minimum specified amount, the Foundation can establish a fund in your name, a family member’s name,
an organization, or any person you wish to honor. Funds vary in their use and in the amount of
involvement the donor wishes to maintain in their dispersal.

Unrestricted Funds can be used for ever-changing community needs, which often cannot be anticipated at the time a gift is made.

Field of Interest Funds target an important area of community life such as aging, arts, health, youth, etc. You identify your personal interest area when making your gift; our board awards grants that make a difference in the area you select.

Designated Funds direct your gift to a specific agency or purpose. You identify the recipient you wish to benefit; our staff manages the annual distribution of funds.

Advised Funds provide donors with ongoing involvement in the use of a gift. Working with our staff, you identify ways to use dollars from your fund to address community needs.

Endowments can be funded by gifts of cash, stocks, bonds, real estate, or personal property to the Foundation. Donations to an endowment fund may be eligible for a State of Michigan income tax credit. Endowments can also be funded by bequest of a portion of your estate to the Foundation, in some cases receiving a substantial reduction in federal gift and estate taxes.

An additional benefit to donors is having the experience of the Foundation to handle administrative details related to their gift. Most importantly, however, is the knowledge that a gift to the Shelby Community Foundation will make a difference in
the community today and long into the future. There’s no wrapping paper, tape, or bows required. Just give us a call at 586.909.5305.
